It's time for Grandma's dog to go for a walk. The eager pooch tugs the boy's hand, excited to get going. But where will they end up?

This is a dog walk like no other—through amazing fairytale worlds, paintings come to life, Escher-inspired castles, an intricately cluttered antique shop, and past countless delights: walking teapots, miniature steamboats, giant hedgehogs, and islands with sails.

This fantastical story of a dog and a boy is told simply through weird, whimsical and often hilarious illustrations. Children will pore over each page, delighting in the incredible details. Each reading will bring fresh discoveries and new twists to the tale.

Sven Nordqvist—the beloved Swedish children's author and illustrator of Findus the Cat—unleashes his endlessly inventive talent in this funny and satisfying wordless book. Walking the dog will never feel the same again.

(Ages 3 to 7 years)

“The unpredictable sense of scale unsettling, but the ink, watercolor, and acrylic drawings have the genteel elegance and wide-ranging imagination of classic fairy tale illustration and will reward multiple readings.”
Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

“Amusement abounds in the mixture of modern and historical aesthetic elements, Alice in Wonderland variety in proportions of the fantastical beasts and people, and tiny, expressive faces. The perfect choice for a rainy day for readers and nonreaders alike.”
Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

“It begins straightforwardly enough: a child takes grandma's dog for a walk. Suddenly, everything changes—it's like Alice in Wonderland and M.C. Escher teamed up to make a wordless picture book. An incredibly intricate and dreamlike journey.”
School Library Journal list of The Most Astonishingly Unconventional Books of 2021

“Descriptions for each page of this wordless story could merit a full-page review. Sven Nordqvist of Findus and Pettson fame has created a book that could be pored over and examined many, many times, each time discovering something new. (I used a magnifying glass to view the tiny, tiny figures).... Really you have to see this book; it defies description as the little girl and the dog travel to every imaginable fantasy world and back home to the old lady.”

Sven Nordqvist

Sven Nordqvist (b. April 30, 1946) is a Swedish writer and illustrator of children's books and is known best for his series Pettson and Findus, about old farmer Pettson and Findus, his talented cat. Nordqvist was born in Helsingborg and grew up in Halmstad, Sweden. He originally wanted to be an illustrator but was rejected by several art schools, so he studied architecture at Lund Institute of Technology and worked for a while there, lecturing on architecture. Meanwhile, he continued to look for work as an illustrator of advertisements, posters, and picture books. In 1983, he won first prize in a children's book competition and since then has worked exclusively as an author and illustrator of children's books. During his career, Nordqvist has received awards in Sweden and Germany. His Pettson and Findus books are especially popular in Germany, where the characters are known as Pettersson and Findus. In Danish they are named Peddersen and Findus. In Finnish they are Pesonen and Viiru, and in a few English translations, Festus and Mercury. In 2007, Sven Nordqvist won the Augustpriset literary award in the children's books category, for his book Var är min syster? (Where is my sister?). In 1992, he won the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis (German Youth Literature Prize). He is married and has two adult sons.
